Sharing tags are too far down the page for Facebook

Why it matters

Facebook's crawler stops reading a page after the first megabyte: "Any Open Graph properties need to be listed before the first 1 MB of your website or app, or it will be cutoff." A tag that comes after that point doesn't exist as far as Facebook, Instagram and Messenger are concerned. It happens on pages that inline a great deal before their tags, and on templates that print the sharing tags at the end of the document.

How to fix it

Move the og: and twitter: tags to the top of <head>, straight after <meta charset> and <title>, before any inline styles, scripts or data. If the page's HTML is over a megabyte, that is worth fixing too: it is slow for everyone, not only for crawlers.

Examples

These are the rule's own test pages, and what it says about each. They are run on every change to the rule book.

They differ only in what the server answered:

1.4 MB into the page

WarningThe last sharing tag is 1.4 MB into the page. Facebook stops reading at 1.0 MB, so it never sees it.

PassedThe sharing tags are all within the first 1.0 MB, which is as far as Facebook reads.
